Crate Training
Dog crates can be a beneficial tool and a place for them. They can make the dog feel secure because it is surrounded by a small area. Some dogs will be straightforward to crate train, while others might be harder.
Below are some tips and tricks on crate training your dog:
- First, have the door open to the crate, let the dog go in the crate, sniff it out, and see what that crate is about.
Then, you can put some treats or toys in the crate and have the dog go into it to get them.
Once your dog starts to feel more comfortable, you can try setting a bowl of food in it. This should hopefully cause the dog to want to go in and eat its food while leaving the door open to the crate.
- You can eventually tell the dog to go in the crate while leaving the door open. Give the dog treats when it goes into the crate.
- Now, try to shut the door to the crate while the dog is in it. Start with a few seconds while giving the dog treats. Let the dog come out of the crate. Keep repeating this process while slowly increasing the time the dog is in the crate.
Eventually, you should be able to leave your dog in the crate with the door shut for up to an hour. To keep it busy, you can give it chew toys, bones and Kongs.
How crates can be used for training:
Crates can be great training tools. For example, if you want your dog to go to a quiet spot for a little while to give it a break, you should start this process slowly by leaving it in there for 10 minutes at a time and building up to a few hours. Crates can also help your dog feel more secure and relaxed.
Eventually, you should be able to say crate or kennel to your dog and expect your dog to go right in. This will take time and practice.
